1st Black History Month event with our Youth & Seniors

Hello, hope all is well.

On February 24, 2012, AngelaCARES, Inc. had our first Black History Month event with the seniors from Lafayette Senior Living Center in Jersey City, NJ. The youth participates were the youth who just completed our 5 week Youth Volunteer Workshop. As we were about to leave for our event, we had a youth who heard about what we were going to do and wanted to join us, which we gladly allowed!

The event was a SUCCESS! Our youth performed for the seniors by reciting mini bios about inspirational African Americans leaders. Each youth selected an inspirational person that they admired. The selections were great choices; see for yourself!

  • Derek Jeter
  • Rosa Parks
  • Hakeem Nicks
  • Barack Obama
  • Michele Obama
  • Nat Turner
  • Maya Angelou
  • Mahalia Jackson

On the flip side, the children heard about the Underground Railroad, which was right here in Jersey City. We also heard about Rosa Parks and learned about the African Americans who invented the Elevator, Street Cleaner, the Pencil Sharpener and Traffic signal.

At the end of the event, we joined and sung GOD Bless America, which was led by a fellow senior citizen! The night ended with a nice treat for everyone to enjoy!

Please watch our videos which are located on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/angelacares2011.

We really enjoyed ourselves!

Thank you,

AngelaCARES, Inc.
